What's New for Form 7004 (2026 and 2027)

Quick answer

The current Form 7004 is the December 2025 revision, with instructions published November 25, 2025. For the 2027 filing season, calendar-year returns are due March 15, 2027 (partnerships and S corporations) and April 15, 2027 (C corporations, trusts and estates).

The current revision

Form 7004 (Rev. December 2025) is one page, needs no signature, and lists 34 form codes, including code 37 for Form 708. We check IRS.gov for a new revision every January and update the form-filler when one is posted. Line-by-line instructions.

Paper-only returns for tax year 2025

For tax year 2025, Form 7004 had to be filed on paper to extend Forms 708, 8924 and 8928. The IRS says e-filing for these forms starts with tax year 2026.

June 30 C corporations: 7 months becomes 6

C corporations with tax years ending June 30 that began before January 1, 2026 get a 7-month extension. For tax years beginning in 2026, the automatic extension is 6 months. Check the 2026 Form 1120 instructions for the matching due date.

Paying electronically

The IRS recommends paying electronically whenever possible. See IRS.gov/Pay, and remember Form 7004 doesn't extend the time to pay.

No approval letters

The IRS no longer sends a notice that an extension was approved. It writes only if the request is disallowed. How to know the IRS got it.

Still no free IRS e-file for Form 7004

IRS Free File Fillable Forms lists Form 4868 as its only extension form. Form 7004 isn't on it. You can still fill out Form 7004 free here and mail it.
