File Form 7004 Online: E-File It or Fill It Out Free

Quick answer

You can file Form 7004 online two ways. E-file it through an authorized IRS e-file provider, which costs money but gets you an IRS acknowledgment. Or fill it out online free, print it and mail it.

The IRS itself doesn't offer a free way to e-file Form 7004. Its Free File program covers Form 4868 for individuals only.

How e-filing Form 7004 works

Form 7004 is e-filed through the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) system. You don't submit it on IRS.gov yourself. An authorized e-file provider transmits it for you.

  • You enter the same information as the paper form: name, EIN, address, form code, tax year and your tax estimate.
  • The provider transmits it to the IRS and gets back an acknowledgment that the IRS accepted or rejected it.
  • You can pay at the same time. If you e-file Form 7004, you can pay the balance due by electronic funds withdrawal (see Form 8878-A).
  • It counts by the date and time in your time zone when it's transmitted.

Our partner, TaxExtension.com, e-files Form 7004. There is a cost to e-file. If you choose to e-file, you'll go to our partner TaxExtension.com. We may receive compensation from that partner.

Can you e-file Form 7004 for free?

Not through the IRS. The IRS Free File program, including Free File Fillable Forms, lists Form 4868 as its only extension form. Form 7004 isn't on the list, because Free File is for individual returns.

When you see "free Form 7004" offers, they usually mean free to fill out and print, then you mail it. That's what we offer: fill it out here free, with no account, and we'll show you where to mail it.

When you can't e-file Form 7004

Some returns and requests have to go on paper. Form 7004 can't be e-filed for:

  • Forms 706-GS(D), 8612, 8613, 8725, 8831 and 8876.
  • Applications that attach Form 1138 (a net operating loss carryback) or Form 2848 (power of attorney). Those are sent separately.
  • Name changes, refund requests, reasonable-cause requests, and installment elections for part of a balance due.
  • Accounting period changes, unless you already have IRS approval or meet certain conditions.
  • Early-filed returns and short-period extensions when an S corporation election ends.

For tax year 2025, Forms 708, 8924 and 8928 also needed a paper Form 7004. E-filing for those starts with tax year 2026.

When paying to e-file is worth it

  • The deadline is days away. No trip to the post office, no postmark worry.
  • You want proof. An IRS acknowledgment, instead of waiting to see if a letter shows up.
  • You'll e-file the return. If you mail Form 7004 and then e-file the return, the return can be processed before the extension is granted, which may cause a penalty notice.
  • You owe tax. You can pay by electronic funds withdrawal in the same step.

Common mistakes filing Form 7004 online

  • The name doesn't match IRS records. Use last year's return name. A mismatch can mean no valid extension.
  • The wrong form code. 09 is Form 1065, 25 is Form 1120-S, 12 is Form 1120. All codes.
  • Waiting past the original due date. Form 7004 can't be filed late.
  • Thinking the extension covers payment. It doesn't.
